The Max Cleland Project
ABOUT
The Max Cleland Project is an effort to preserve the legacy of Joseph Maxwell Cleland (1942-2021), or “just Max” as the former US Senator often told people to call him. Beyond being a Georgia State and US Senator, Head of the Veterans Administration under President Carter, and Georgia’s Secretary of State, Max was a war hero, PTSD survivor, author and inspirational figure.
Preserving Max’s legacy means telling not only his story, but the stories of so many people who were inspired by him. This project will capture as many of those stories as possible for a collection of interviews to preserve his legacy, which will be made available through an online catalog and housed at a prominent institution.
With enough funding, from the Project will come a documentary film – Strong at the Broken Places, the remarkable survival story of a man who, like most of us, had his demons, yet inspired thousands.
